Submission to the UN special procedures regarding the recognition of our resources as extremist

BHC informed the UN Special Rapporteurs on freedom of opinion and expression, the situation of human rights defenders and the situation of human rights in Belarus about the recognition of our resources as "extremist materials". 

By the decision of the Court of the Zheleznodorozhny District of Homel on June 7, 2024, which took place without prior notification and participation of representatives of the organization, the BHC's resources, including the Facebook page and the official website, were recognized as "extremist".

The UN Independent Expert on the enjoyment of all human rights by older persons has received information on violence and abuse against elderly political prisoners

BHC provided information to the Independent Expert on the enjoyment of all human rights by older persons, which is a partial answer to its request to prepare a thematic Human Rights Council in 2023 on violence, abuse and neglect of older persons.

In the report we revealed that at least 40 elderly people are now imprisoned for political reasons, 5 of whom are over the age of 70.

The report on accountability for violations of the rights to freedom of association and peaceful assembly has been sent to the UN Special Procedures

The Belarusian Helsinki Committee in cooperation with HRC Viasna, Legal Initiative, International Committee for the Investigation of Torture, and Lawtrend prepared a report on the penalization of severe violations of the rights to freedom of association and peaceful assembly. The report was sent as part of an appeal for the Special Rapporteur on the rights to freedom of peaceful assembly and association.

We appealed to the UN special procedures in connection with the ongoing repression of independent trade unions in Belarus

The Belarusian Helsinki Committee addressed the Special Rapporteurs on the rights to freedom of peaceful assembly and association, on the situation of human rights defenders and on the situation of human rights in Belarus with information about repression by the Belarusian authorities against independent trade unions in violation of the right to freedom of association. 

In the report, we drew attention to the fact that at the moment there are more than 40 trade union activists and leaders imprisoned for political reasons.

We sent a message to the UN Special Procedures on the practice of recognizing civil society organizations as extremist formations

The Belarusian Helsinki Committee, Human Constanta, Lawtrend and the Belarusian Association of Journalists addressed the special rapporteurs on freedom of expression, rapporteurs on freedom of peaceful assembly and association, and on the human rights situation in Belarus to describe the practice in using anti-extremism legislation to harass representatives of civil society organizations by the authorities.

The Belarusian Helsinki Committee sent a communication to the UN Special Rapporteurs on freedom of religion or belief, on the situation of human rights in Belarus and on minority issues with information about human rights violations, in particular, the right of Catholics to manifest their religion, and the right to cultural life and the right to health of general public, in connection with the closure of the Red Church.

The BHC sent information to the Special Rapporteur on the situation with human rights in Belarus on the adoption by the House of Representatives in the first reading of the draft Law “On Amending Codes on Criminal Liability”. The draft law proposes to amend the sanction of part 2 of Article 356 of the Criminal Code, providing for the possibility of imposing the death penalty for treason against the state committed by an official holding a public position or a person covered by the status of a military man.
